Buying an engagement ring can be a daunting task, considering the plethora of choices and the sentimental value attached to this piece of jewelry. However, with a bit of guidance and understanding of the key factors involved in selecting a ring, you can make an informed decision that you will cherish forever.

Deciding on the Budget

Before you start shopping for your ring, it’s crucial to decide how much you are willing to spend. In this comprehensive guide, we have covered several critical aspects of purchasing an engagement ring. By understanding these elements and carefully considering your preferences and budget, you can confidently select a ring that symbolizes your love and commitment.

When it comes to engagement rings, diamonds have long been the gem of choice. However, with changing tastes and an increasing emphasis on individuality and sustainability, many people are now exploring alternatives to diamonds. These diverse options for rings not only offer a unique aesthetic appeal but can also be more affordable, making them a smart choice for many couples.

This gemstone is nearly as hard as a diamond and has superior brilliance and fire. Due to its synthetic nature, moissanite is more affordable than diamond, yet offers comparable beauty.

  • Pros: High brilliance, durable, affordable
  • Cons: Slightly different color profile than diamond

Sapphires are traditionally blue but come in a variety of colors including pink, yellow, and green. They are second only to diamonds in hardness.

  • Pros: Wide color range, very durable
  • Cons: Fewer cuts available due to crystal shape

Emeralds have a rich green color that has been prized for centuries. While not as hard as diamonds or sapphires, they are still suitable for daily wear if properly cared for.

  • Pros: Unique color, historical significance
  • Cons: More prone to scratching

Discover Moissanite Rings in Placentia, CA

Morganite is a relatively new gemstone on the market that has gained popularity due to its peachy-pink hue. It’s typically less expensive than other gemstones.

  • Pros: Affordable, unique color
  • Cons: Not as durable as other options

In addition to these gemstones, there are numerous other options including pearl, opal, garnet and others. It’s also worth considering lab-created diamonds which offer all the benefits of natural diamonds at a fraction of the cost.

When choosing an alternative to diamond for your engagement ring:

  1. Consider your budget: Some alternatives like moissanite can be significantly cheaper than diamonds.
  2. Think about durability: If you’re planning on wearing your ring every day, you’ll want something that can withstand daily wear and tear.
  3. Reflect on personal taste: Do you prefer traditional or more unique looks? This will guide you towards certain stones.
  4. Research ethical implications: Some alternatives like lab-grown diamonds are free from the ethical concerns associated with mined diamonds.

Remember that there’s no right or wrong choice when it comes to choosing your engagement ring stone—it’s about finding something that suits your style and budget while symbolizing your love in the way that feels best for you.

Decoding the 4 Cs of Gemstone Grading: Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat

If you’re considering purchasing a gemstone ring, it’s crucial to understand the 4 Cs of gemstone grading – Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat. This standardized grading system allows you to evaluate the quality and value of a gemstone. Let’s delve into each of the 4 Cs to help you make an informed purchase.

Cut refers not only to the shape of a gemstone but also how effectively it has been cut from its raw form. Precision in cutting tremendously impacts how light is absorbed and reflected by the stone. A well-cut gemstone will have increased brilliance and sparkle.

  • Brilliant Cut– known for maximizing light return through the top of the stone.
  • Step Cut– offers rows of facets in a step-like fashion.
  • Cabochon Cut– polished but not faceted; stones appear smooth.

Clarity evaluates internal or external flaws—known as inclusions or blemishes—in a gemstone. These natural characteristics can affect the passage of light through the stone and thus its beauty.

  • Flawless (F): No inclusions visible under 10x magnification
  • Internally Flawless (IF): Only insignificant surface blemishes
  • Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS): Minor inclusions difficult to see under 10x magnification
  • And so on up to Included (I1-I3), where inclusions are visible under 10x magnification.

Depending on your preference and budget, a stone with minor imperfections can be an acceptable choice if they do not significantly obstruct its overall appearance.

This ‘C’ grades a diamond’s colorlessness or presence of color in other gemstones. For diamonds, a grading scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown) is used. Other colored gemstones are evaluated based on their tone, saturation, and hue.

Carat refers to the physical weight of the stone. More massive gemstones are rarer and thus more valuable. However, size doesn’t always equate to quality. It’s the combination of the 4 Cs that determines a gemstone’s value and beauty.

Carat Weight Approximate Size
0.25 Carat 4 mm
0.5 Carat 5 mm
1 Carat 6.5 mm
1.5 Carats 7 mm
2 Carats 8 mm

When purchasing a gemstone ring, understanding these four aspects can guide you in your decision making process, ensuring you find a ring that matches both your aesthetic preferences and budgetary needs.

Understanding Different Gemstone Shapes for Your Ideal Ring

It’s not just about aesthetics; each gemstone shape has unique characteristics that impact their brilliance, durability, and overall appearance on a ring. This guide will help you understand the different gemstone shapes to help you make an informed decision for your ideal ring.

Round Shape

The round shape is perhaps the most sought-after for diamond rings. Known for its exceptional brilliance due to its 58 facets, this versatile shape suits various ring styles.

  • Pros: Maximizes light reflection; suits various settings.
  • Cons: More expensive due to high demand and waste during cutting.

Princess Cut

This square or rectangular cut is the second most popular shape. Its sharp corners and numerous facets enhance its sparkle.

  • Pros: Great brilliance; more affordable than round cut.
  • Cons: Sharp edges may be prone to chipping.

Oval Shape

An elongated version of the round cut, oval-shaped gemstones are a popular choice among those who prefer a unique yet classic look.

  • Pros: Creates an illusion of larger size; slenderizing effect on fingers.
  • Cons: Sometimes exhibits a ‘bow-tie’ effect with certain lighting.

Emerald Cut

Emerald cuts are rectangular with chopped corners and step-like facets. They showcase clarity more than sparkle and have a vintage appeal.

  • Pros: Highlights clarity; less prone to chipping.
  • Cons: Inclusions and color weaknesses are more evident due to fewer facets.

Marquise Cut

A marquise-cut gemstone features pointed ends with curved sides that resemble a boat’s hull. It’s perfect for those seeking a dramatic and unique appearance with high perceived size-to-carat ratio.

  • Pros: Makes finger look longer; covers more surface area per carat.
  • Cons: Pointed ends require protective setting to prevent damage.

Pear Shape

Combining round and marquise shapes, pear-shaped gemstones offer distinctive beauty with their teardrop form that radiates excellent fire and brilliance.

  • Pros: Unique appearance; creates slimming effect on fingers.
  • Cons: Color inconsistencies may be noticeable at the tip.

Each gemstone shape has its own charm as well as strengths and weaknesses. The right one for you depends on your personal style and how these elements align with your priorities when it comes to beauty, durability, cost-effectiveness, or other considerations. By understanding these factors, you’re now better equipped in making the ultimate decision: Choosing the perfect gemstone shape for your ideal ring.

This guide aims to provide you with a comprehensive analysis of different metals used in ring crafting to help you make a well-informed decision.

It is a traditional choice and has been used in jewelry making for thousands of years. Gold is measured in karats (K) – the higher the karat number, the purer the gold.Yellow GoldWhite GoldRose Gold

Platinum is a strong, durable metal that’s perfect for those who prefer a silver-colored ring but want something more luxurious than white gold. Its durability ensures that it won’t wear away easily.

Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is an affordable alternative to platinum or white gold. It’s soft compared to many other metals which can make it prone to scratches.

Titanium rings are lightweight yet extremely strong.

Palladium shares many of platinum’s positive attributes at a lower price point. It’s also less dense than platinum which makes it lighter.

Choosing between these metals depends on several factors: 1.Budget: Metals like platinum are more expensive than silver or titanium because they’re rarer. 2.Skin Sensitivities: Metals like titanium and palladium are hypoallergenic and won’t cause skin irritations. 3.Durability4.Maintenance: Some metals require more upkeep than others. For example, silver tarnishes over time and requires regular polishing.

Remember, the perfect ring is not just about the stone; the metal plays a significant role too. It holds your precious gemstone in place and contributes to the overall aesthetic of the ring. Hence, give it due consideration before making your final selection.

  •   I've bought a wristwatch and a custom designed ring from Mimi's, and sold a no longer needed engagement ring to them. All my dealings with them have been a pleasure. I highly recommend Mimi's to anyone needing jewelry, even if they are not local to the store.

    thumb Mark W.

I had an engagement ring to sell and based on so many wonderful reviews, I made an appointment with David at Mimi's Jewelry. He was very friendly, honest and communicative. I'm extremely happy with my experience and will definitely be back. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to buy and/or sell fine jewelry!

    thumb Angela R.

The staff at Mimi's are all knowledgeable and so friendly! They go above and beyond to accommodate your needs and fulfill your requests! David and his team will do what they can for you as soon as they can! Their pricing is more than fair and inventory vast; custom work incredible!
Can you tell? I just think they're great!!!!

  •   Service and quality of work have always been 5 stars here. This particular Friday afternoon, the staff went above and beyond earning the 6th star! It was near 6pm when I came in to have my battery watch replaced and customize my costume necklace jewelry, into a bracelet. The girls were so attentive and did everything on the spot. I wasn't feeling rushed out or feeling like a burden at closing time. It took less than 8 minutes to change my battery and cut the link, customizing my necklace in front of me! It turned out better than I even envisioned! Although I brought my own watch battery, and was expecting to pay labor, to which the girls dismissed any type of payment- sending me out with a smile. Thank you so much for your great service, generosity and earning my continued, repeat business MIMI!

Found out about Mr Truong via a web forum I I read.
Ordered a Luminox watch from Mimi's , based on forum reviews of Dave's professionalism and service.
    Very easy to work with.
When I damaged my watch he got me taken care of.
This was not a big $ sale for this store, but he treated me, just a suburban Atlantan, like an A-lister.
Go see him - it's refreshing to see this type of customer service/concern in this day/age!

    thumb Doug J.

Great jewelry store and greater people to work with. 100% trustworthy.
It's been a few years since I purchased my wife's engagement ring and she still stares at it!

    thumb Keith F.
  •   Never knew this Jewelry store was there! Highly recommended!!!! VERY PROFESSIONAL AND FRIENDLY!!! tucked away in corner of Albertsons center! Highly recommended you visit for all your Jewelry needs to purchase, or selling...

    thumb Dana C.

I have purchased from Mimi's Jewelry a few times and have always been extremely happy.

    thumb Paul S.

David made a beautiful engagement ring for my wife after the center stone setting on her original platinum ring broke. After sending pictures of the styles she liked, he designed a perfect ring for her 3 diamonds, sent us pictures, then incorporated the changes my wife asked for. The finished ring is beautiful and loved by my wife. From the day we shipped the broken ring to Mimi's until we received the new ring was less than a month. We have never had jewelry custom made before and didn't have a clue. David and his team made us feel very comfortable during the entire process. David and his staff were amazing to work with.

    thumb Rick N.
  •   I was taken advantage of. I went here to sell my bank notes, coins, and jewelry and I later found out I was ripped off. Part of it was my fault for admitting I didn't know how much my "treasures" were worth, but I also told the owner that I felt I trusted him. Big mistake! Huge mistake! Don't go trade in your "treasures" here unless you have a solid idea of how much it's worth. You will be taken advantage off without the slightest care from the owner.

    thumb Stephanie E.

I have never been able to wear a watch due to rashes from a nickel allergy. The owner, Dave, contacted the director of engineering at a watch company who went through every component of a titanium watch to insure no nickel would touch my skin. For the first time in my life I'm wearing a watch and it's fantastic. This is the above and beyond customer service that Mimi's is famous for.

    thumb Todd B.

I had David help me with a wedding set makeover for our 35th. It turned out beautiful and I am so happy with it. He really worked with us to get the most for our budget. I also had him do a couple other things that turned out perfect. Not only does Mimi's do awesome work but David is so easy and pleasant to work with.
